Part 2 in our team questionnaires comes from Katherine. Katherine started work with us as one our architects this summer, August 2015, 4 months in and she already feels like a longstanding member of the family.
What is your favourite piece of architecture in the UK – Why?
Alexandra Road estate in Camden by Neave Brown. It optimises the golden age of social housing design in London in the 1950s. A vision for social cohesion that embraced new technology and challenged housing preconceptions. At its heart are fundamental values that couple society and architecture, something we can all learn from.
If you had not become an architect what would you have been?
A chef or a baker. I love cooking and making people happy with my food. I think you can be really be creative with cooking.
What do you do for fun, relax or to unwind?
I love to bake and make cakes for friends and family. I also enjoy music festivals and try to attend Glastonbury as often as I can.
What is your favourite treat yourself cuisine or place to eat?
I really enjoy going out for brunch so anywhere open on a weekend morning with good coffee is great. I like going to the riding house cafe and social pantry on Lavender Hill.
What is your favourite most inspirational country/city? How would you describe the architecture there?
I have visited Malaysia multiple times, and when in Borneo I stayed in Long Lellang in the Kelebit highlands in a traditional longhouse. The large terrace areas are ideal for monsoon season as well as shade in the dry season. The longhouses are true simplicity but when inside the artwork and interior adds real individuality to the home.
What is your favourite season and why?
I love spring because it’s a symbol of all that’s new. I really enjoy summer and the anticipation in spring that summer is just around the corner is exciting.
If you could visit/ experience any piece of architecture in the world where would you go and why?
I would really like to see the Zollverein School by Sanaa in Essen. I think its such an interesting build in terms of scale and design and I believe seeing it in it’s context would really illustrate its alien nature.
What is your favourite film?
Ferris Bueller’s Day Off, I always watched it at home when I was off school sick and it always made me feel a little better.
What is number 1 on your list of places to visit?
I would like to visit Chicago to see the home of skyscrapers.
What is the best piece of advice you have been given?
If you go out for dinner always leave room for pudding.
