In order to approach the seat design from a unique perspective, we wanted to understand the atmosphere of the surrounding area. This was captured by producing extensive photographic collages of everything from Boston street lighting, to pavement textures and details of the surrounding architectural context.
Once we had fully understood the character of the surrounding area, we delved into the historical narrative of the The Fort Point Channel. It became clear that there were layers of cultural influences that could be used to inform our design.
The industrial landscape, importance of trade and the shipping industry, along with the recognition of Boston as a principal market place of wool and apparel in the US, gave us ideas that would make the street seat unique for Boston.
It was also important to consider the current planning direction for the area, transforming the harbour into a ‘unique and dynamic neighbourhood where tradition and modern culture meet.’
