The Etching House is a traditional two storey terraced house in South East London. The project looks to achieve the typical loft extension and side infill extension in a non traditional manner.
The existing internal floors and walls are removed and the floor levels dropped to increase head height on all floors, ensuring that the loft conversion is as spacious as the ground and first floor levels.
The staircase is re-orientated to bisect the house into two more spacious zones, the front and the rear. The staircase becomes a timber sculptural element, growing to form all the new internal walls.
The existing floor levels, stairs, skirting and a fireplace that are removed are etched onto the finished walls and joinery to show their presence in the new layout.
